Queen Victoria had an affair with Indian courtier: Film

Contrary to her sombre public image, in private Britain's Queen Victoria was a passionate, romantic and a feisty politician who even had an affair with an young and handsome Indian servant, according to a new film.

Apart from the Indian courtier Abdul Karim, Victoria had flirtatious relationships with two of her Prime Ministers -- Lord Melbourne and Benjamin Disraeli -- and also developed an affair with a British servant, the Daily Mail reported, citing the film to be aired on 'Channel 4' next week.

In fact, the Queen fell for Karim whom she had asked to teach her Hindi and also to educate her in his Hindustani culture when she became Empress of India. ''He is a very strict master and a perfect gentleman,'' she wrote about him.

Victoria had insisted that he was treated as an equal among her advisers and courtiers and anyone who did not do so she accused of racism, eroding the boundaries between Monarch and servant, the film reveals.

But the love of her life was her cousin Prince Albert to whom she proposed following just four days of courtship.

She went to the extent of writing a breathless account to Lord Melbourne after their wedding night.
''It was a gratifying and bewildering experience. I never, never spent such an evening. His excessive love and affection gave me feelings of heavenly love and happiness. He clasped me in his arms and we kissed each other again and again,'' Victoria wrote.

As Prime Minister, Lord Melbourne used to guide the young Queen through the intricacies of statecraft, which led to the first scandal. However, marriage was out of the question and once she set her sights on Albert, she dropped Melbourne.

But Albert died of typhoid when she was just over 40, and Victoria went into deep mourning and seclusion.

Soon, there was another scandal as Victoria became enchanted by Benjamin Disraeli. ''He is full of poetry, romance and chivalry,'' the Queen wrote of her new PM in 1868.

But all the other scandals apart, it is the exact nature of her relationship with British servant John Brown that is the most tantalising mystery.

When Victoria died, in accordance with her strict instructions, she was laid out in her wedding dress with a cast of Albert's hand beside her, along with a photograph of John Brown.

It has only recently been discovered that she was also buried wearing Brown's mother's wedding ring, fuelling speculation that they could have been secretly married.

Selectors induct Yusuf and Ojha in ODI squad

Baroda all rounder Yusuf Pathan and young Hyderabad left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha were on Friday rewarded for their impressive showing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) by being named in India's 15-member cricket squad for next month's tri-series in Bangladesh and the Asia Cup in Pakistan.

The national selectors, who met in Mumbai on Friday, decided to emphasise on a young squad for both the tournaments and ignored former captains Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid, who were dropped from the one-day team during the triangular series in Australia.

The selectors also recalled talented Uttar Pradesh batsman Suresh Raina in the squad for both the tournaments for the second tri-series in succession. Sachin Tendulkar had already been ruled out of both the tournaments because of a groin injury.

The 21-year-old Raina, who last played a ODI in January, 2007, edged out other contenders like his Chennai Super Kings teammate Subramaniam Badrinath, Delhi's Shikhar Dhawan and Hyderabad's Venugopal Rao who have done well in the IPL.

The teams for the June 8-14 triangular ODI event in Bangladesh, also featuring the hosts and Pakistan, and the June 24-July 6 Asia Cup in Pakistan were announced by Cricket Board's secretary Niranjan Shah after a selection committee meeting which lasted about one hour.

The selectors made five changes in the team that created history under Mahendra Singh Dhoni's leadership by winning the tri-series in Australia for the first time ever in March.

Tendulkar, who has not yet recovered fully from his groin injury that forced him to miss two home Tests against South Africa and the first seven IPL games for Mumbai Indians, the banned Harbhajan Singh, Munaf Patel, Dinesh Kaarthick and Manoj Tiwary were those left out of that squad.

Sending out a strong message, Harbhajan, banned by BCCI for five ODIs for slapping Sreesanth after the IPL game between his team (Mumbai Indians) and Punjab King's Eleven at Mohali on April 25, was left out of the Asia Cup squad though he would have served out his ban after India's first two ties in Pakistan.

Nitin Patel will be the physio for the Bangladesh tri-series and Asia Cup this is a short-term arrangement till a full time physio is appointed.

No sachin for Tri-series

The national selection panel meets on Friday to pick the team for next month's ODI tri-series in Bangladesh and the subsequent Asia Cup in Pakistan amid speculation that youngsters who have done well in the Indian Premier League might be given a chance.

The tri-series in Bangladesh will be held from June 8-14 and would be followed by the Asia Cup in Pakistan. The five-member selection panel led by Chief Selector Dilip Vengsarkar will also have to decide on the fate of senior players Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly.

The two former India skippers were not picked for the last ODI series played by India, the triangular series in Australia that India won for the first time by a comprehensive 2-0 margin over the reigning world champions in this format of the game.

Well a couple of names missing from those batting and bowling lists are those of Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly. And those two are also likely to be missing from the Indian team for the tri-series in Bangladesh next month.

A lot would depend on what ODI captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni wishes as also the inputs from coach Gary Kirsten. The duo is scheduled to attend the meeting at the Cricket Board's headquarters here.

But the sources have told NDTV that Tendulkar will not be included in the team for Bangladesh. Sourav Ganguly is also unlikely to find a place. That's because the selectors are looking to pick a young team for both tournaments.

The Bangalore and Kolkata teams led by Dravid and Ganguly failed to sparkle in the IPL and have been knocked out of the competition before the semi-final stage.

The other two opening slots perforce seem to have been nailed by Gautam Gambhir and his Delhi Ranji and IPL skipper Virender Sehwag, with their strong showing in the Twenty20 league.

Swapnil Asnodkar, the Goa Ranji opener, could also be discussed following his flamboyant approach in the IPL for Rajasthan Royals.

Dravid faces competition from younger and fitter rivals like Shikhar Dhawan, Suresh Raina, Venugopal Rao and S Badrinath but, in the likely absence of in-form and injured batsman Rohit Sharma, could just squeeze his way in because of his vast experience.

The selectors are expected to look long and hard over the multi-faceted cricketers like Yousuf Pathan, who can also fill in the off spinner's slot in the absence of the banned Harbhajan Singh, and Abhishek Nair, a handy lower order batsman and useful medium pacer.

Royals prepare to battle Daredevils

A high-octane contest between two well-balanced sides is on the anvil when table toppers Rajasthan Royals take on the confident Delhi Daredevils in the first semifinals of the Indian Premier League on Friday.

The two teams, which finished first and fourth in the preliminary 56-game phase of the Twenty20 league, look evenly matched ahead of what promises to be a top-drawer stuff in front of a capacity crowd at the Wankhede Stadium.

The team that holds its nerves better and grabs chances that come its way would go through to the summit clash against the winners of the second semifinal, on May 31, between Punjab King's Eleven and Chennai Super Kings.

The second semifinal is also to be held at the Wankhede while the final is scheduled on June 1 at the D Y Patil Stadium, having a bigger crowd capacity.

The Shane Warne-led Rajasthan, impregnable at home in Jaipur, had finished with only three losses from their 14 preliminary phase ties and have a 1-1 head-to-head record against the Daredevils, led by Virender Sehwag, who got into the last four with seven wins and 15 points to their credit.

Both had lost their matches to hosts Mumbai Indians when they visited this metro earlier and those ties were held in D Y Patil. Both must be wishing fervently that a change in venue for this knock-out tie would bring in happy tidings.

Both the teams have depended on their top-order to fire well and pile up a big total, and middle orders of both the sides looked a bit under-prepared when chips were down.

They would be keen to topple the top three rival batsmen cheaply to gain a big advantage.

Tracks at the Wankhede for the IPL have helped the seam bowlers by providing lateral movement and extra bounce and someone of the calibre of Delhi Daredevils' champion bowler Glenn McGrath would relish rolling his arm over here.

The battle between McGrath, with support from Sri Lankan Farveez Maharoof and V Yo Mahesh, and Rajasthan's successful innings launchers Graeme Smith (416 runs) and Swapnil Asnodkar could be crucial to the game's outcome.

The same applies to the Sohail Tanvir-Shane Watson-Munaf Patel combine who will be up against the marauding Delhi opening pair of Gautam Gambhir (523) and Sehwag (403), as well as another in-form batsman at number three, Shikhar Dhawan.

Tanvir, with his extra quick bowling arm action similar to another Pakistani Wasim Akram, has been a real revelation in the IPL and has hardly been collared by any rival batting line-up, indicated by his superb haul of 21 wickets at just 10 runs per victim.

The left armer has been outstanding both in the beginning and at the death and is a major threat that needs to be negotiated well by the Delhi batsmen who did not play against him in the previous two clashes.

Rajasthan possess a better spin attack in the great Warne and his understudies Yousuf Pathan and Dinesh Salunkhe while Delhi depend on Amit Mishra, for the most part, with Sehwag chipping in with his off breaks. But seam bowlers are expected to play a bigger role at the Wankhede.

Delhi have had a sizeable break of five days going into the tie while Rajasthan, without a few key players including Warne, were outclassed by Punjab King's XI yesterday.

Winning the toss and fielding first has become the order of the day for matches which commence at 8 pm and the trend is likely to continue on Friday.

It has been largely rain-free so far in Mumbai, barring light drizzles, and the IPL authorities must be hoping that the weather remains clear over the next few days.

The high prevailing humidity, however, is not only uncomfortable for the players but also an indicator that rains are around the corner.

'Do-or-die' battle for Super Kings

Chennai Super Kings face a do-or-die battle for a semi-final berth in the Indian Premier League as they take on out-of-contention Deccan Chargers, who are yet to post a win on home turf, at the Rajiv Gandhi International stadium on Tuesday.

A loss on Tuesday would all but end Super Kings' chances of making the semifinals after Mahendra Singh Dhoni's men narrowly lost the match against the Rajasthan Royals on Saturday.

The Chennai team has 14 points from seven wins and six defeats in the tournament so far. The visitors start favourites against the Adam Gilchrist-led hosts, who are no longer in the race for the title after losing 11 of their 13 matches and finishing last.

The hosts, however, will play for pride as they aim to post their maiden win at home.

However, for the Super Kings, it is a battle to stay alive in the tournament that they dominated in the initial stages before losing steam.

However, the batting line-up still looks formidable with the presence of the redoubtable Dhoni, Suresh Raina, S Badrinath and Albie Morkel. Parthiv Patel and Stephen Fleming have shown that they can also strike upfront when it matters.

The Chennai bowlers like Manpreet Gony, Makhaya Ntini, L Balaji and Muttaiah Muralitharan have done an effective job on several occasions.

Moreover, the team will have the psychological advantage over the Chargers who are a dejected lot following their successive defeats in the series.

The main drawback of the home side appears to be its failure to fire as a unit though the individual performances of Gilchrist, Rohit Sharma and Venugopal Rao have been remarkable.

Some of the team's foreign signings Herschelle Gibbs, Scott Styris and Shahid Afridi have failed to meet up to expectations though Gibbs has started finding some form of late.

In the bowling department, the team will rely on the experienced RP Singh and Chaminda Vaas to bring an end to their losing streak.

England beat New Zealand in second Test

Andrew Strauss's 106 was the centre-piece of England's run chase in a come-from-behind six-wicket win against New Zealand in the second Test at Old Trafford.

England, set 294 for victory, finished on 294 for four on Monday as they won with more than a day to spare and so went 1-0 up in this three-match series following the drawn first Test at Lord's.

When opener Strauss was out, England still needed 59 more to win. And their nerves weren't helped when the in-form Kevin Pietersen, going for a needless second, was run out for 42 by Iain O'Brien's throw from fine leg to wicket-keeper Brendon McCullum.

That left England on 248 for four, 46 runs adrift. And with 30 runs wanted, pace bowler O'Brien dropped a gentle caught and bowled chance offered by Ian Bell on nine.

Bell, who finished on 21 not out, and Paul Collingwood, unbeaten on 24, guided England home off the last ball before tea.

This victory saw England set a new record for the highest fourth innings winning total scored in an Old Trafford Test, breaking the mark of 231 for three they posted against the West Indies four years ago.

Middlesex left-hander Strauss, who top-scored with 60 in England's meagre first innings 202, faced 186 balls with 12 fours.

This was the 31-year-old's 12th hundred in his 48th Test, his first having come on his debut against New Zealand at Lord's four years ago.

But that England had a chance of victory in a match where they had been largely outplayed owed much to Monty Panesar.

The left-arm spinner's Test-best haul of six for 37 in New Zealand's second innings 114 kept England's target within manageable bounds.

Strauss had not long completed his second century in three Tests when he was caught by Ross Taylor, diving low to his left at first slip, off O'Brien to leave England 235 for three.

England resumed in blustery conditions on Monday on 76 for one, Strauss 27 not out and captain Michael Vaughan unbeaten on 12.

It looked as if they might get through the morning without losing a wicket until Vaughan was caught behind for 48 after a second-wicket stand of 90.

New Zealand captain and left-arm spinner Daniel Vettori, who had taken five wickets in the first innings, remained a threat.

But Strauss and Vaughan, unlike England's batsmen in the first innings, were ran hard to take singles and turn ones into twos.

There was a sense of momentum shifting and McCullum, in an echo of England's poor out-fielding, saw a wild shy at the stumps go for four overthrows.

All-rounder Jacob Oram, whose eight first innings overs cost five runs, was brought into the attack with England 119 for one.

He hadn't bowled at all Sunday after landing awkwardly on his shoulder during fielding practice and injuring his neck. But the medium-pacer twice beat Vaughan outside off-stump in his first over Monday.

However, it was the introduction of pace bowler Chris Martin that led to a wicket when Vaughan, driving loosely, was caught behind to leave England 150 for two.

England had been in a struggling position after conceding a lead of 179 on first innings.

This was the 11th straight Test where they'd failed to reach the first innings benchmark total of 400.

But Panesar, 25 of whose 101 Test wickets have come at Old Trafford, gave the batsmen a chance to make amends after Taylor had set-up New Zealand's strong early position with a career-best 154 not out.

The third Test starts at Trent Bridge on June 5.

NASA spacecraft successfully lands near Mars' north pole

A NASA spacecraft plunged into the atmosphere of Mars and landed in the Red Planet's northern polar region to begin 90 days of digging in the permafrost to look for evidence of the building blocks of life.

Cheers swept through mission control at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory late on Sunday night when the touchdown signal from the Phoenix Mars Lander was detected after a nailbiting descent. Engineers and scientists hugged and high-fived one another.

''In my dreams it couldn't have gone as perfectly as it went,'' project manager Barry Goldstein said. ''It went right down the middle.''

Among Phoenix's first tasks were to check its power supply and the health of its science instruments, and unfurl its solar panels after the dust settled. Mission managers said there would be a two-hour blackout period as Phoenix conducted the checks while out of view from Earth.

Phoenix plunged into the Martian atmosphere at more than 19,311 kph after a 10-month, 711 million-kilometre voyage through space.

It performed a choreographed dance that included unfurling its parachute, shedding its heat shield and backshell, and firing thrusters to slow to a 8 kph touchdown.

''Touchdown detected!! We're on the surface of Mars and there is celebration in Mission Control!!'' JPL engineer Brent Shockley blogged from inside mission control.

It's the first successful soft landing on Mars since the twin Viking landers touched down in 1976. NASA's twin rovers, which successfully landed on Mars four years ago, used a combination of parachutes and cushioned air bags to bounce to the surface.

Phoenix's landing is a relief for NASA since Mars has a reputation of swallowing spacecraft. More than half of all nations' attempts to land on Mars have failed.

Phoenix's target landing site was 48-kilometer-wide shallow valley in the high northern latitudes similar in location to Earth's Greenland or northern Alaska. The site was chosen because images from space spied evidence of a reservoir of frozen water close to the surface.

Phoenix is equipped with an 8-foot-long arm capable of digging trenches in the soil to get to ice that is believed to be buried up to a foot deep. Then it will analyze the dirt and ice samples for traces of organic compounds, the chemical building blocks of life.

The lander also will study whether the ice ever melted at some point in Mars' history when the planet had a warmer environment than the current harsh, cold one it currently has.

Scientists do not expect to find water in its liquid form at the Phoenix landing site because it's too frigid. But they say that if raw ingredients of life exist anywhere on the planet, they likely would be preserved in the ice.

Phoenix, however, cannot detect signs of alien life that may exist now or once existed. The only other time NASA searched for chemical signs of life was during the Viking missions. Neither lander found conclusive evidence of life.

Millions celebrate gay pride in Brazil parade

Millions of people waving rainbow flags and wearing lavish Carnival costumes paraded in South America's biggest city to celebrate gay pride and demand an end to homophobia and sexism.

To the beat of loud music blasted off more than 20 sound trucks, gay men, lesbians and cross-dressers danced and cheered through the skyscraper-lined Avenida Paulista, Sao Paulo's financial heart on Sunday.

Organisers expected more than 3 million people at the 12th annual Sao Paulo Gay Pride Parade, which traditionally is one of the biggest in the world. Local authorities did not immediately give an estimate on the number of people attending the event, but said millions were likely to be present.

According to Sao Paulo's department of tourism, the parade was expected to attract nearly 330,000 tourists to the city, 20 per cent more than last year's event. At least 5 per cent of those tourists were expected from abroad.

The tourists are expected to bring about USD 115 million to the city, in addition to helping create 13,500 direct and indirect jobs.

The parade caps a full week of attractions, including the Cultural Gay Fair, Gay Day and the International GLS Tourism Forum, the city's tourism department said.

''We still see cases of homophobia in the country,'' Brazilian Tourism Minister Marta Suplicy told the crowd from the top of a sound truck. ''We still don't have a law making homophobia a crime, and that needs to change. Congress has to approve this law.''

Authorities arrested at least five people for small robberies during the parade, and a man was injured in the leg after being run over by one of the sound trucks.

Last year, at least 3 million people packed the streets of Sao Paulo for what organisers said was the world's largest gay pride parade.

Chetan Anand wins Spanish Open badminton title

Chetan Anand capped his brilliant run to beat Henri Hurskainen of Sweden in a thrilling three-setter and win the men's singles title at the Spanish Open badminton championship in Madrid on Sunday.

Anand, seded fifth in the tournament, pulled off a 21-17, 19-21, 21-14 win against Hurskainen to script a memorable win.

Another India, little-known Neha Pandit, rode on some impressive wins to reach the final of the women's singles event.

In the final Neha, who had to qualify for the main draw, lost to sixth seed Maria Elfira Christina of Indonesia 16-21, 4-21.

National champion Anand has shown red-hot form throughout the season and reached the final of Indian Open in April vanquishing some world class shuttlers.

Anand's biggest victory in the tournament came against top seed Andre Kurniawan Tedjono of Indonesia in the semifinal on Saturday.

Anand thwarted a tough fight from Tedjono and kept his cool in vital moments of the game for a 21-17, 9-21, 22-20 win.

His other victories came against Marcel Reuter of Germany, Andi Hartono and Stanny Kusuma, both from Indonesia, in the first three rounds.

The World no 49 will surely get a boost in his ranking after clinching the Spanish Open.

Neha finally came out of the shadow of her more illustrious compatriots Saina Nehwal and Aditi Mutatkar.

She stunned some big names and seeded players to enter the final of the 32-player event. Neha's best win was against third seed Anu Nieminen of Finland. She was a set down in the second round match but came back to clinch it 18-21, 23-21, 21-16.

She showed nerves of steel as she won two more cliff hangers against Emelie Lennartsson of Sweden and Karnie Jorgensen of Denmark in the quarterfinal and semifinal respectively.

Grant sacked as Chelsea coach

Avram Grant has been sacked as manager of Chelsea after less than one season in charge, the English Premier League club announced on Saturday.

Grant's future was the focus of fierce speculation almost from the time he inherited the Stamford Bridge reins from Jose Mourinho eight months ago.

And just three days after his side came off second best in a penalty shoot-out to Manchester United in the Champions League final in Moscow the Israeli's tenure is now at an end.

Despite the constant questioning of his position Grant, a close friend of owner Roman Abramovich, has been credited with leading Chelsea to their first ever Champions League final.

He also oversaw their late push for the league title, taking United down to the final day of the season before they were forced to settle for second place.

Cheergirls issue: Co mulls legal action

Wizcraft International Entertainment Pvt Ltd has alleged that Jorge Aldana, who brought the two cheergirls who later alleged racial discrimination, has attempted to extort money and cash in on the issue.

Dancers Ellesha Newton, 22, and Sherinne Anderson, 25, claimed they were stopped from going on stage by organisers ahead of an Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket match in Mohali, Punjab.

Newton told a newspaper: "An organiser pulled us away. He said the people here don't want to see dark people. The 'N' word was used and they said they only wanted beautiful white girls. We were crying. I could understand if it were the crowd, but they were very receptive."

In a statement on Friday afternoon, Wizcraft said that ever since the issue was highlighted by the media since the past four days, Aldana had expressed his willingness to back down from the claim (of racial discrimination) in return for further payment.

If the company failed to meet the demand, he threatened to approach the international media. In his SMSes, he demanded a compensation of Rs.400,000, but in verbal communication, the demand was for a larger sum.

"We have evidence of this SMS that was sent by Aldana to one of the company's directors," said Wizcraft.

The company has decided to initiate appropriate legal action in this regard against the people concerned.

The company also dismissed all the allegations as false and baseless.

Among other things, Wizcraft said that the issue is an attempt at extortion and the real attempt of Jorge and his friends seems to be to build a saleable public image for themselves.

The company said it had contracted the Indian agent, DJ Akhtar Fazel, for providing the troupe of cheerleaders and they (Wizcraft) had no direct dealings with the dancers. The girls were brought here by Jorge Aldana through his company, Fierce Performance Productions.

The dancers' claimed through the media that the alleged incident occurred April 19 in Mohali but the same cheerleaders also performed in Jaipur April 21, Wizcraft pointed out.

"For an entire month, no complaint has been registered with the Wizcraft management, Kings XI Punjab management or IPL or any competent authority. Even the agent through whom the troupe of cheerleaders was contracted hasn't ever heard of this incident," said the statement.

Earlier this week, two dark-skinned cheergirls, who were hired by the Kings XI Punjab team, through Wizcraft, had kicked up a storm by alleging that they were asked "to sit out" just before the April 19 match of the IPL played in Mohali because they were not white (skinned).

"Wizcraft would like to reiterate that all the allegations levelled against the company's officials are completely baseless and false. Wizcraft has at no time endorsed or supported discrimination against individuals on the basis of gender, colour or nationality," said the statement.

Chennai look to seal semi-final berth

On the threshold of making it to semi-finals, the Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings will be keen to seal their berth among the last four as they take on a second-string Rajasthan Royals in an Indian Premier League match on Saturday.

Losing their last home-leg tie against Bangalore Royal Challengers must have hurt the side badly as they messed up a modest run chase to let slip a golden chance of reaching the semis the other night.

The host batsmen would be cautious against committing the hara-kiri that compounded the problem for them and lingered their semifinals aspirations further.

The Super Kings hope not to repeat the mistake of taking their opponents lightly, even though Rajasthan Royals' captain Shane Warne is planning to field untested players as the side has already made it into the last-four stage.

But, the bigger headache for the Super Kings is that a win over Rajasthan will not ensure a place in the semis as they have to await the result of match between Mumbai Indians and Deccan Chargers.
dhoni-ipl
The Chennai-based team is presently placed third on the table with 14 points from 12 matches (seven wins and five losses) and Mumbai Indians (12 points), also looking to make the cut for the semis, have three more matches to go in the league stage.

Super Kings' assistant coach and administrator V B Chandrasekar admitted that the team was indeed under pressure after they were defeated by the Bangalore outfit.

"In any way we will be under pressure after losing the last game. It does not matter whether we play a second string or the first eleven of Jaipur team," he said.

"It may be a tight rope walk but we cannot keep losing and hope to qualify for the semifinals. We have to pull up our socks and win against Rajasthan tomorrow and beat the Deccan Chargers too (on May 27)," he added.

Chandrasekar said they had learnt a few lessons from the tie against Bangalore and would need to put up a flawless show.

"There cannot be any changes in our strategy. We need a win tomorrow. One bad show put us in this situation but lessons have been learnt from the loss. Parthiv Patel or Stephen Fleming should have carried on. It was also not easy for batsmen when the ball was not coming on to the bat."

Assessing the Rajasthan side, the former national selector said, "Anything they have tried, they have found success. Everything clicked well for Warne including the changes in batting order. They are going along with the stream doing things spontaneously, which is something worth watching and learning."

"They are having a dream run. Somewhere it has got to end. Twenty20 is a dangerous game. We are hoping it will end with us," he added.

Warne, on the other hand, said before the knockout phase, he would like to do some experimentation and keep more options open.

"Having made the semifinals, we have an opportunity to try out different combinations and give chances to our players, who were benched in the previous matches.

"We should be giving Yusuf Pathan and Ravinder Jadeja a few more overs to bowl. We are likely to experiment to give more chances to youngsters in the team and also change our batting order a bit," he said.

'Ganguly still good for T20, ODIs'

Former Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin said Soruav Ganguly was still 'good enough' to play ODIs and twenty20 formats of cricket.

"He is still good enough for the shorter versions of the game," Azhar said at a function where Ganguly was felicitated for playing 100 Tests and 300 ODIs for India.

Recalling Ganguly's phenomenal talent, Azhar said "When I first saw him during an ODI at Manchester, I thought he can do it, he can go a long way".

Ganguly also exuded confidence that his side would come out of the rough times. "My team is going through bad times, but we will come out of it."

Asked what motivated him to keep going, Ganguly said, "It's my love for the game. Ask the same question to Rahul and Sachin and they will say the same thing".

Delhi keeps semis hopes alive

Delhi Daredevils recovered from a mid-innings wobble to hand Bangalore Royal Challengers yet another defeat, even as they strengthened their own chances of making it to the last four of the IPL.

Having asked the Challengers to bat, Delhi were set a challenging target of 155. It would not have been possible without Misbah-ul Haq's late charge against Delhi's bowlers. Delhi got there with five wickets and ten balls left.

Delhi got off to yet another speedy start, thanks to their in-form openers Gautam Gambhir (39 from 31 balls) and Virender Sehwag (47 form 19). But after their nexus was broken at 90, Anil Kumble briefly worked his magic that left Delhi stuttering at 133-5.

It still wasn't enough for Bangalore to come back into the game after the vicious opening partnership that was scored in just seven overs. Shikhar Dhawan and Ferveez Maharoof knocked off the remaining runs with ease to round up a comprehensive dismantling of Delhi.

The win had been set up by another fine performance by Delhi's seamers. Glenn McGrath (4-0-15-2), Maharoof (4-0-13-2) and Yo Mahesh (4-0-25-0) had Bangalore's batsmen under control.

For Bangalore, Sreevats Goswami was promoted up the order at opener Bharat Chipli's fall. The youngster, who kept wickets for India in the U-19 World Cup, aggregated 52 runs with fluent strokes.

Goswami kept at the pace going after Jacques Kallis and Rahul Dravid perished for small scores. Kallis (25) was caught behind to Maharoof's first ball. Dravid (9) slogged against Tilakaratne Dilshan and missed.

Bangalore had a late order collapse where they lost Craig White (1), Praveen Kumar (2) and B Akhil (3) in quick time. But Misbah provided the boost to the innings.

He made an unbeaten 47, the last 24 of which were scored against Rajat Bhatia's final over of the innings.

With the win, Delhi have now moved to 12 points to tie with Mumbai. However, Delhi have played 12 games to Mumbai's six and the Daredevils must win their remaining two matches to have a realistic chance of reaching the semifinal.

Must-win game for Delhi Daredevils

Delhi Daredevils cannot afford another loss and face a must-win game against Bangalore Royal Challengers in the Indian Premier League (IPL) at Chinnaswamy stadium on Monday.

The Daredevils lost their last match against Kings XI Punjab on Saturday and are currently occupying fifth place in the IPL standings with 10 points from 11 matches.

The last two matches of the Daredevils are against Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders - both of whom are also fighting for semifinal berths - and to stay in contention the Delhi team need a big win against the Royal Challengers.

The Daredevils though would not be unduly bothered by their loss in their last game against the Kings XI Punjab as they were clearly on top of their opponents for most part of the game and had it not been for the rain, the match could have very well gone their way.

Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir were in blistering form and at one moment the Daredevils were eyeing a score of more than 200 before rain interrupted the proceedings.

"We do not have any control over the weather. We could have very well crossed 200 and that would have been difficult to chase for Kings XI," a disappointed Sehwag said after the match.

Daredevils were not only good with the bat, they also fielded well and took some brilliant catches and that would be motivation enough to go all guns blazing against the Royal Challengers.

Royal Challengers, on the other hand, are placed at the bottom of the table and are stumbling from one defeat to another. They have lost eight of their 10 matches and are currently lying at the bottom of the table.

Though they are already out of the semifinal race, the Challengers certainly would like to finish their IPL campaign with some wins under their belt. Challengers captain Rahul Dravid is under pressure to perform but things are not moving their way. They would like to bring some cheer for the home crowd.

Dressing room off-limits to Shah Rukh

Bollywood actor and Kolkata Knight Riders owner Shah Rukh Khan expressed disappointment at the ICC Anti Corruption Unit barring him from going to the team dug out and dressing room in the remaining matches.

"I like to hang around with the boys. I am very energetic. I am very disappointed that the ICC has stopped me. I don't know the ICC rules. I'll tell only one thing. Nobody dare stop me from coming to Kolkata. I'll be here whenever my team plays a match at the Eden," Khan said.

Earlier in the day, the Anti Corruption Unit officials had cautioned the actor about going into the dressing room and the team dug out during the Indian Premier League match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings.

Sources said later they directed the matinee idol to stay away from these areas in the remaining matches of his team.

Asked about the Knight Riders' defeat against the Chennai side, he said, "You play the game to win. We feel sad when the boys lose. But such things happen.

"I work hard. I want them to work harder. I would have liked the Kolkata Knight Riders to reach the final," he said.

On the Knight Riders's success as a brand, SRK said "With the help of colleagues we've done something for this. Still there is a long way to go before it becomes the number one sporting brand".

Khan said he was overwhelmed by the response of the Kolkata public and conceded the gate sales had fetched him twice the amount he had expected

Birth interval linked to stillbirth and infant death

Birth intervals of less than 18 months are associated with a high risk of stillbirth and infant deaths.

A stillbirth is the death of a baby in the womb after the 20th week of pregnancy. Stillbirths may be due to maternal factors, fetal factors, or uterine factors. Injuries, illnesses (such as toxemia), infections, or catastrophic events (such as haemorrhage, or cardiac arrest) would affect both mother and child. Birth defects and growth abnormalities of the fetus can occur. Uterine factors (such as placental detachment, placental obstruction, or restricted uterine growth) can prove dangerous to the fetus. If one is pregnant, the usage of alcohol, drugs, and tobacco, can cause stillbirth, and infant death. Also, short birth intervals have been associated with adverse birth outcomes.

To study the association between preceding interval and risk of stillbirth, researchers in India evaluated data collected as part of the government-sponsored Integrated Child Development Scheme in the province of Uttar Pradesh. Trained health workers recorded the detailed pregnancy outcomes of 33,111 married women during their home visits during the period between 1992 and 2002. During the study period, a total of 80,164 births and 78,186 live births were reported. After adjusting the data for potential and known risk factors, the incidence of stillbirth was significantly greater when birth intervals were less than 18 months; between 18 and 35 months and greater than 60 months with odds ratios of 3.44, 1.52 and 1.44, respectively. Additional risk factors were maternal age of 35 years or older, which increased the risk of still birth by 34 per cent and multiple births, which increased the stillbirth risk of more than four times. It was also found that infant deaths were significantly greater with birth intervals of less than 18 months and 18 to 35 months with odds ratios of 4.39 and 1.81, respectively.

Knight Riders to take on resurgent Mumbai Indians

An engrossing and no-holds-barred battle for vital points to book semifinal spots are on the cards as resurgent home team Mumbai Indians take on a revitalised Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium on Friday.

Among the many small battles that make up, the overall picture would be the raw pace-versus-ace encounter between Kolkata's Shoaib Akhtar-Ishant Sharma combine and the Sachin Tendulkar-Sanath Jayasuriya duo of the hosts.

Jayasuriya's power-packed display on Wednesday, when he carted the Chennai Super Kings' bowling around with gay abandon in his amazing 114 not out including 11 sixes and nine fours, would surely have increased the crowds hunger to witness similar pyrotechnics with the bat from the home team.

Mumbai Indians, with Tendulkar at the helm since Wednesday after he missed the first half of their round robin campaign due to a groin injury, were in the sixth spot with eight points following their fourth win on the trot after a dismal beginning.

Two points ahead of the home team are the Knight Riders led by Sourav Ganguly and a victory for either would be a huge setback for the losing outfit in their race to advance to the knock-out stage of the 44-day competition that ends with the summit clash at the D Y Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on June 1.

The key to the match, perhaps, will lie in how well the double act of Jayasuriya and Tendulkar shape up against the controversial and temperamental Akhtar, who demolished the Delhi Daredevils top-order in his devastating opening spell two nights ago.

The Mumbai Indians opening duo, two cricketers who have played the maximum number of One-Day Internationals in their career, will have to be at their best to keep out the menacing Akhtar and his comrade-in-arm Sharma for the home team to either post a challenging total or chase successfully.

From among the rest, Ajit Agarkar, who knows the conditions here well, Umar Gul of Pakistan and Ashok Dinda, can provide adequate support to the pace spearheads of Knight Riders, owned by Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan.

Toss also would be crucial as the side that wins it would, in all probability, put the rival team in on what's expected to be another track offering copious bounce as was the case last night when there was a lot of pace and lift for the speedsters.

Mumbai Indians' pacers, led by the redoubtable Shaun Pollock who has bowled splendidly right through the competition, are also capable of exploiting the pitch
conditions well as they displayed against Chennai Super Kings.

Both the teams go into the high-profile clash with a lot of momentum, with Knight Riders winning their last three ties and the hosts having won their last four matches.

Mumbai Indians are unlikely to make any change in their triumphant line-up, while Kolkata might be tempted to bring in Agarkar for another Mumbai Ranji player, Iqbal Abdulla, as horses for the courses strategy.

In batting, Knight Riders are depending a lot on Ganguly and Australian David Hussey to play big knocks while the rest of the batsmen have not fired big so far, another key element in the equation.

The home team will have the services of West Indian all rounder Dwayne Bravo for the last time this season before he returns to the Caribbean to get play the Test series against Australia. He has filled in very nicely for the injured Lasith Malinga of Sri Lanka and would like to exit the arena with a bang.

Delhi rides home on Mishra's hat-trick

What L Balaji did to Kings XI Punjab last week, nobody thought it would be repeated so soon. But the feat was repeated and how similar they were. This time the protagonist was a not much known leg-spinner Amit Mishra.

He took five wickets, with his hat-trick coming in the last over, and guided Delhi Daredevils to a 12-run win over Deccan Chargers at the Ferozshah Kotla in New Delhi on Thursday. Mishra for his extraordinary performance was adjudged as the ' Man of the Match'.

Mishra's victims were Gibbs, Afridi, Ravi Teja, RP Singh and Pragyan Ojha. Gibbs and Afridi, who looked out of touch in their previous matches, hit form together and it doesn't take a genius to guess the outcome. Both blasted pacers Asif and McGrath. Sehwag then introduced spinner Amit Mishra, who struck with the first ball and saw Afridi back in the hut for 33 runs. In his very next over, Mishra struck again and dismissed Gibbs for 22 runs. The fall of these two crucial wickets slowed down the run chase.

In-form Rohit Sharma then took charge and smashed 35 runs off 18 balls. He fell when he tried to play paddle sweep and exposed his stumps to Maharoof.

After Sharma fell, Venugopal continued from where he had left in the last match and kept Deccan Chargers in contention. Once McGrath removed Venugopal, things became tougher. The target was still attainable but Amit Mishra came and trampled Deccan Chargers with his hat-trick.

Amit Mishra, who made a forgettable debut for India in 2003 in Bangladesh, was surely Sehwag's trump card for the evening.

Earlier, Delhi's daredevils Gautam Gambhir and Shikhar Dhawan with their half-centuries gave their side a solid platform to launch their assault on Deccan Chargers and win after four consecutive defeats in the DLF IPL.

After put in to bat by the Deccan Chargers, Delhi Daredevils skipper Virender Sehwag perished for naught in the first over of their IPL tie.

Virender Sehwag tried to slash the last delivery of P Vijaykumar but the ball found RP Singh beneath it at the third man region. From there on, Gambhir and Dhawan dominated the battle with Deccan bowlers. Gambhir carried on with his ominous form and smashed three sixes and seven fours. Shikhar Dhawan also joined the party and remained unbeaten on 68 runs.

Gambhir made 79 runs before Adam Gilchrist stumped him off Pragyan Ojha's bowling. Ojha struck soon and removed Maharoof who scored quick 19 runs. Tillakratne Dilshan also chipped in with a swift knock of 16 runs before Gilchrist ran him out.

Despite this win, there is no shuffle in the points table. Daredevils retain the fifth position with ten points.

Shah Rukh unruffled by Aamir's blog

Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan has said that he is not ruffled by Aamir Khan's latest blog post that talks about the former's pet dog named ''Shah Rukh''.

The superstar has said that he is taking it in spirit.

After Amitabh Bachchan's blog created a controversy with his remarks against veteran actor and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Shatrughan Sinha, Aamir's latest blogpost talks about his pet dog ''Shah Rukh'' at his home in Panchgani.

Aamir, who is recuperating from a hamstring injury suffered on the sets of ''Ghajini'', said he has nothing to do with the naming of the dog.

''Shah Rukh is the dog of the caretakers of our house. When I bought this house it came with the caretakers,'' he clarified in the blog.

When his reaction was sought to Aamir's blog, Sharukh on Thursday said he is not bothered and that he was taking it in the spirit.

''I have never bothered about it because I also say a lot of things in fun and I think I am also may be stressing somebody else out. I don't get stressed when friends pass comments like this. Actually I enjoyed it,'' Shah Rukh said.

Aamir said apparently, Shah Rukh, the actor was shooting a commercial in the Panchgani house, a few years ago, and that very day, the caretakers bought a pup and named him after the then rising star.

''What are the chances of me buying a house which comes with a dog called Shah Rukh. Some of my friends claim that I bought the house because of the dog. I would have to be a serious fan of Shah Rukh to want to do that. All I can say is that I'm waiting for him to come over,'' Aamir wrote on his blog.

This is not the first time that Aamir has taken a shot at Shah Rukh. A few months back he had said at an event ''I would like to ask Shah Rukh how it feels to be number two after Aamir.''

Aamir wrote in his blog, ''Shah Rukh is licking my feet and I am feeding him biscuits every now and then. What more I can ask for?''

He ends the entry saying, ''Shah Rukh is once again begging for my attention, so let me get back to him. He is smelling too much. I think he needs a bath. Heel Boy, heel.''

Though Aamir claims there is no motive in his latest blog post about his dog, it has evoked criticism from the blog readers.

SMS not bad grammar but linguistic renaissance: Study

Parents need not worry - a new study contends that SMSes and online chats actually help teens hone their linguistic abilities, rather than degrade them.

Parental worry has stemmed from the lack of grammar and the extensive use of often-unintelligible abbreviations like LOL, OMG and TTYL in SMSes - also known as instant messaging (IM).

But the study has concluded that IM represents ''an expansive new linguistic renaissance'' being evolved by GenNext kids.

Researchers at the University of Toronto have pointed out that teenagers risk familial censure and ridicule of friends if they use slang. But IM allows them to deploy a ''robust mix'' of colloquial and formal language.

They based their conclusions on an analysis of more than a million words of IM communications and a quarter of a million spoken words produced by 72 people aged between 15 and 20.

The researchers have argued that far from ruining teenagers' ability to communicate, IM lets teenagers show off what they can do with language.

''IM is interactive discourse among friends that is conducive to informal language,'' said Derek Denis, co-author of the study, ''but at the same time, it is a written interface which tends to be more formal than speech''.

They found that although IM shared some of the patterns used in speech, its vocabulary and grammar tended to be relatively conservative.

For example, when speaking, teenagers are more likely to use the phrase ''He was like, 'What's up?''' than ''He said, 'What's up?''' - but the opposite is true when they are instant messaging. This supports the idea that IM represents a hybrid form of communication.

Nor do teens use abbreviations as much as the stereotype suggests: LOL (laugh out loud), OMG (oh my god) and TTYL (talk to you later) made up just 2.4 percent of the vocabulary of IM conversations - an ''infinitesimally small'' proportion, say the researchers.

And rumours of the demise of the word ''you'' would appear to have been greatly exaggerated: it was preferred to ''u'' a whopping nine times out of 10.

In fact, the study suggests that the use of such short forms is confined mostly to the youngest users of IM.

The findings of the study have been published in the spring issue of the journal American Speech.

South Indians now lead the rest of the country in migrating to Canada and Australia and with a new set of rules coming out in these countries migration is going to go up by another 30 per cent, said an official of an immigration consultancy firm on Wednesday.

BS Sandhu, chairman and managing director of World Wide Immigration Consultancy Services Ltd (WWICS), said on account of the new set of rules, the waiting period for migrating to Canada is now just five months if one chooses the education route.

''It has now become faster via the education route which means that one can work and earn up to Canadian $1,000 a week by working for 20 hours a week while studying. Moreover, the Canadian Parliament has recently provided for increased budget for the country's missions to process a backlog of 9,25,000 immigration cases,'' said Sandhu.

He also added that with English becoming a requirement, those from the South Indian states stand a better chance.

''Another country that has now become a favourite is the Czech Republic where by investing barely Rs 1.5 million one can get a business visa and that too in a matter of less than 10 months,'' said Sandhu.

Kolkata ask five players to leave

Close on the heels of the unrest in the Bangalore camp, five domestic players in the Kolkata Knight Riders squad have been asked to go home.

The players - Ranadeb Bose, Sourashish Lahiri, Rohan Banerjee, Cheteshwar Pujara and Yashpal Singh have been released of their contract.

These players have not had a chance to play for the Knight Riders side so far in the IPL.

Team director Joy Bhattacharya said the decision was taken by the team management, which felt it was best to relieve the players since they had little chance of playing in the remaining six league games of the IPL.

He added that the coach John Buchanan did not want players sitting idle in hotel rooms when they had little chance of playing.

"John had planned for some practice matches where these players were to have been included. But since there is hardly any time to host any, we have decided to release them," Bhattacharya told The Telegraph.

The newspaper reported that the five contracted players will be allowed to stay with the Shah Rukh Khan-owned franchise till Sunday and not a single penny will be deducted from their contracted amounts.

Dravid's job on the line?

It's been more than six months since Rahul Dravid gave up the Indian team captaincy but the man known as the wall is once again under the spotlight for his captaincy in the DLF IPL. In the last one week, he has had to justify the 18.6 crore rupees spent on his team's star players, he has lost a CEO who was seen as supportive and he has had to endure criticism of leading a Test team in a T20 competition. Yet, the Bangalore icon player chose to remain steadfast in the defence of his team.

Dravid, in his trademark stoic style has defended himself and his team, by saying that they are a great bunch of players; they just haven't managed to get the right combination yet. He said he has full faith in his team and that they would fight back.

He has seen his Bangalore Royal Challengers side completely go to pieces and with mounting pressure over the selection of players in the team, Dravid will need a special performance from his players today against a strong Kings XI Punjab outfit if they want to entertain any chances of advancing to the semifinal.

"We are not playing good cricket so people are obviously going to comment, there are other teams rated much higher than we were who are not doing well. I believe we have quality players and we will fight back," he said.

Any addition to the six losses that Bangalore have already suffered will mean that the Royal Challengers will leave themselves just too much to do to qualify for the last four.

Their opponents, the Kings XI Punjab might have lost to Chennai on Saturday. But exactly a week ago, they trounced the Royal Challengers by six wickets and they'll be confident of repeating the feat given their firepower at the top of their batting line up.

Balaji's spell turned the game in chennai's favour

Laxmipathy Balaji's fiery bowling left Kings XI Punjab gasping as Chennai Super Kings trounced them by 18 runs in the return leg of the DLF IPL at the MAC Stadium in Chennai.

The Man of the Match, L Balaji picked five wickets conceding just 24 runs in his spell of four overs. This also includes the hat-trick he took in his last over, the first in the tournament. Balaji, who has been out of international cricket for the past couple of years, made a roaring comeback in his second IPL match.

In the first spell, he picked Yuvraj Singh and the big wicket of Shaun Marsh (58). In the last over he picked three players Irfan Pathan (40), Piyush Chawla (17) and VRV Singh.

Kings XI failed to avenge their loss to Dhoni's men despite Irfan Pathan and Shaun Marsh's heroics. Shaun marshaled Punjab innings single handedly while wickets kept tumbling from the other end. Yuvraj could not fire and perished cheaply. All-rounder Irfan Pathan made 40 runs and looked to see his side through but Balaji came up with his magical spell and put an end to Punjab's hopes of recording their sixth consecutive win.

Defending a total of 181, Super Kings bowlers were up for their job and picked wickets regularly to hamper Punjab's run chase. Albie Morkel provided Chennai Super Kings the early breakthrough as he removed Punjab opener James Hopes, who was looking threatening.

Earlier, with the help of the innings of MS Dhoni and S Badrinath, Chennai Super Kings made 181 runs at the loss of four wickets.

Chennai skipper MS Dhoni (60) and S Badrinath (64) did the recovery work for Super Kings with aplomb after their three batsmen collapsed early in the innings. They hit some lusty shots and looked to cross the 200-mark but Punjab made a brilliant comeback. They conceded just 37 runs in the last five overs.

S Sreesanth, all focused and fired up after the 'slapgate controversy', was bang on the target and picked two wickets in his successive overs to remove openers S Viduyt (8) and Stephen Fleming.

Former Kiwi skipper Stephen Fleming failed yet again and added just one run before Karan Goel took his catch at the cover. Suresh Raina in his cameo added 26 runs as his statemate and Punjab spinner Piyush Chawla put an end to his innings.

Then came captain Dhoni to take things under control. He along with S Badrinath added 91 runs for the fourth wicket. VRV Singh finally broke the partnership and Yuvraj caught Badrinath at covers.

With this win, Chennai Super Kings move up to the second place with 12 points. Rajasthan Royals, also with 12 points, lead the table as they have a better net run rate than the Super Kings.
