DVD Disks too small for Xbox 360???

Is DVD format just too small for Xbox 360 games?

There is an interesting article over at Joystiq that discusses the problems that Xbox 360 games will face in the future due to Microsoft's decision to go for the current DVD format instead of a next generation format. Xbox 360 games have not yet come on multiple discs, but an issue of Game Informer indicates that multi-disc games will be coming soon. GI said that nearly every developer it spoke to at X05 complained about the storage issues developing Xbox 360 games.

Apparently, one "highly anticipated" title to hit the Xbox 360 has already used up four full dual-layer 9GB DVD discs. So this unnamed game it will take 4 disc swaps from start to finish. Japanese RPGs that Microsoft has also been touting are likely candidates. While a game being multi-disc doesn't really effect the quality of the game itself at all, the question has to be asked whether gamers in this day will be OK with having to swap discs mid-play.

Games that are likely to be affected by the DVD storage problems in future would be new Grand Theft Auto games for example. Would moving from one part of a city to another require swapping a disc? hopefully not for GTA fans. J Allard has downplayed the storage problems and said improved compression rates in the future will allow more data to be stored on single discs.

Melodrama behind reality TV

Reality shows are getting a bad reputation for allegedly rigging results. Whether it was Rakhi Sawant’s outcry after losing Nach Baliye 3, Sandhya Mridul getting shortchanged on Jhalak Dikhla Jaa or even Raja Hasan losing out to Aneek Dhar on Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2007, there have been complaints on all the shows. Lashing out at Star Plus, the producers and even the votemeter, Rakhi claims that everything was fixed, rigged and planned on Nach. She and her partner Abhishek Awasthi lost in the final round to rival couple Aamir Ali and Sanjeeda Sheikh. Rakhi-Abhishek have now declared the award a fake, and sworn never to work with Star again. Is this a case of sour grapes or is there any truth in her claims? Are reality shows rigged?

Rakhi is just a poor loser, says Star Plus GM Keertan Adyanthaya. "As soon as she lost, she decided the whole show is a farce. This is just a publicity stunt by the couple to remain in the news even after the show ended. If she had any real complaints, she should have approached us, but she is just talking to the media," he points out. "And as far as the police complaint is concerned, it is not actually against the channel, but we are happy to co-operate with any investigation," he adds.

This is just another one of her attempts to create some controversy, agrees Aamir Ali. "We should just stop listening to her. She is insulting the winners, the audience and the channel. The two of them need to stop crying and accept that they’ve lost," he says, adding, "It’s like losing a match and then blaming the umpire, the other players and even the pitch." As for not working with Star again, "After this behaviour, do you think they’ll want to work with her again?" asks Aamir.

But not everyone is convinced. Aamir and Sanjeeda had everyone on their side, feels Tejaswini P., a BA student of Loyola Academy who followed the show. "Rakhi-Abhishek were the better dancers and they deserved to win. But the judges were partial towards Aamir-Sanjeeda. I don’t think the result is correct," she says. Speaking of talent, even on Sony’s Jhalak Dikhla Jaa, the judges were all praise for Sandhya Mridul, but Prachi Desai ended up winning. The young actress had been eliminated earlier in the show, but she was brought back via a wild card entry. Rumour has it that Ekta Kapoor pulled a few strings to make her blue-eyed girl win the show.

Prachi, of course is thrilled to bits. "I really enjoyed myself a lot throughout the show and also worked very hard. My re-entry was an unexpected surprise and I had my fingers crossed till the last moment," she says. "I’m extremely happy that I won, but I would have taken it gracefully had I lost. Right now Rakhi is claiming that her show was rigged. I wonder, would she be saying this if she had won? I just feel bad for the winners, who are really good dancers and deserve the credit," Prachi adds.

Aamir-Sanjeeda fan T.N. Priya, a student of GRIET, agrees that Rakhi’s outcry is unfair to the winners. "It’s so stupid of her to protest now. If she knew the results beforehand, why didn’t she do something then," says Priya. But she doesn’t rule out foul play on the show. "If the participants were ordinary people, there would be no reason to manipulate the results, but with celebs involved, it’s a different ball game," she adds. Another youngster, Asma Khan of St. George’s Girls Degree College, feels there’s definitely something going on. "On Jhalak, Sandhya was definitely the better dancer, but with Nach, you really can’t say ‘coz Rakhi is a drama queen," she concludes.

Dell has unveiled today their newest product, the Dell Latitude XT Tablet PC. The product not only is the first Tablet PC to be manufactured by Dell, but at the same time, it is industry's first convertible tablet to weigh under two kilograms.

"We are listening and aim to exceed customers’ expectations", said Margaret Franco, director, Dell Product Group. "Until now, customers have been forced to make tradeoffs in tablet functionality to have usable systems. With capacitive touch technology, the Latitude XT will revolutionize the way customers interact with their systems, allow customers to take full advantage of tablet technology and enable customers to get more done with greater speed and precision."

The producer has taken another approach to the touch screen technology. Most of the tablet PCs on the market use resistive technology that requires the application of force for the system to recognize user interaction, which is not completely reliable and, moreover, would eventually lead to the screen prematurely wearing off.

Dell's touch-screen technology uses capacitive sensing (digitizer technology, as the company refers to it) to recognize user input. Moreover, the touch-screen can make the difference between the human finger and the special pen shipped with the notebook. The capacitive technology also rejects palm input when the pen is already present on the screen, so that inadvertent contact or hand grip won't disrupt the input.

The touch screen is not only the strongest point in the tablet, it is also subject to a legal dispute between Dell and Motion computing on one side and touch-screen producer Typhoon Touch Technologies on the other. The later claims that Dell is abusing a company patent and filed a complaint to seek an unspecified amount of damages, as well as a permanent injunction enjoining Dell and Motion Computing from the continued alleged infringement. That might translate into Dell's being unable to sell the newly unveiled Tablet PC.

Typhoon's complaint alleges that Motion Computing and Dell are abusing two of their registered patents, called "Portable Computer with Touch Screen and Computer System Employing Same." One was filed in 1995 and the other was filed in 1997.

"As alleged in our complaint, we believe that both Dell and Motion Computing are using and profiting from our patented technologies", said James Shepard, CEO and president of Typhoon Touch Technologies, in a statement. "It is our responsibility to ask the court to enjoin Dell and Motion Computing from the continued violation of our patents and seek recovery of lost profits."

Motion Computing vice-president Michael Stinson confirmed that their legal department is reviewing the complaint: "We had no idea it was coming. As far as I know, we haven't had any contact with them", said Stinson. "We're taking it very seriously but we haven't had a chance to evaluate it... We don't believe our products infringe on any valid claims in the alleged patents."

The best treatment currently available is mesotherapy, the dermatologist suggests. In this method, the required medicine is injected into the desired area. The procedure is carried out in four or five sessions 15 days apart, and the cost for the treatment could vary from Rs 2,000 to Rs 20,000, depending on the severity of the condition. But even this can’t promise you cellulite free results, so you might be better off adopting a more natural method — a lifestyle change to include lots of exercise and a healthy diet.

Xbox 360 DivX/XviD Playback Almost Perfect

The Xbox 360 supports DivX and XviD as of today, which may make some of you with big file collections (like us) as giddy as a kid in store with puppies made of candy. We threw our entire collection of movies, TV shows and random clips at it and found that the 360 can play back pretty much anything. Here are some notes.

You can play files off of a CD/DVD. This feature wasn't listed on the Xbox Team's website as one of the supported locations for playing back content, but this is fantastic for homes that have wireless networks (or no network at all). In fact, reading off a disc is probably the best way to ensure your movie won't cut out in the middle due to network congestion (unlikely) or someone turning off the computer accidentally (fairly likely).

It supports almost all files. It played back all TV shows we threw at it, including My Name is Earl, 30 Rock, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Battlestar Galactica, and The Venture Bros.. Most of these, and most TV downloaded TV shows, are encoded in XviD format. As for DivX, that's supported back to version 5.0, but it's unlikely that you're going to find any DivX 3 or DivX 4 online, unless you're talking about old files you've saved for a couple years.

AC3 Audio is supported. Nice! AC3 support was added in the Spring Update, but it's nice to see it working with DivX/XviD. Too bad it's not 5.1 though. 5.1 is supported!

It supports Windows Home Server as well. Along with USB drives and WMP11 streaming, you can also stream DivX/XviD from Windows Home Server too. It makes sense to store all your videos on here, since videos are big and WHS has a lot of room. QED.

Video Stretching is kind of weird. The Xbox will try and auto-fit your video to the screen when it starts playing, but it gets confused easily with different video dimensions. You'll want to manually change the playback mode to either letterbox or stretched, depending on what kind of content (widescreen, fullscreen, PAL) you're playing back.

You can skip through a video with the bumpers. RB and LB let you skip forward and back through the movie, but might not be granular enough to get to the place you want to be. You'll have to use the trigger buttons to FF or RW.

It's fast. If your network connection is fast enough (my network is Gigabit Ethernet enabled, which isn't a huge deal since the 360 is only 10/100), the video should play back without a hitch. It's quite nice to be able to play back stuff on your 360, in HD, without having to transcode it into WMV first.

It doesn't work in Windows Media Center Extender. You're going to have to kick out of WMC and back to the dashboard in order to play your videos. Annoying for people who like to switch between live TV and downloaded content.

It's not entirely perfect. It's 90% of the way there, better playback controls and Windows Media Center Extender support will make this the perfect DivX/Xvid implementation.
