Delhi rides home on Mishra's hat-trick

What L Balaji did to Kings XI Punjab last week, nobody thought it would be repeated so soon. But the feat was repeated and how similar they were. This time the protagonist was a not much known leg-spinner Amit Mishra.

He took five wickets, with his hat-trick coming in the last over, and guided Delhi Daredevils to a 12-run win over Deccan Chargers at the Ferozshah Kotla in New Delhi on Thursday. Mishra for his extraordinary performance was adjudged as the ' Man of the Match'.

Mishra's victims were Gibbs, Afridi, Ravi Teja, RP Singh and Pragyan Ojha. Gibbs and Afridi, who looked out of touch in their previous matches, hit form together and it doesn't take a genius to guess the outcome. Both blasted pacers Asif and McGrath. Sehwag then introduced spinner Amit Mishra, who struck with the first ball and saw Afridi back in the hut for 33 runs. In his very next over, Mishra struck again and dismissed Gibbs for 22 runs. The fall of these two crucial wickets slowed down the run chase.

In-form Rohit Sharma then took charge and smashed 35 runs off 18 balls. He fell when he tried to play paddle sweep and exposed his stumps to Maharoof.

After Sharma fell, Venugopal continued from where he had left in the last match and kept Deccan Chargers in contention. Once McGrath removed Venugopal, things became tougher. The target was still attainable but Amit Mishra came and trampled Deccan Chargers with his hat-trick.

Amit Mishra, who made a forgettable debut for India in 2003 in Bangladesh, was surely Sehwag's trump card for the evening.

Earlier, Delhi's daredevils Gautam Gambhir and Shikhar Dhawan with their half-centuries gave their side a solid platform to launch their assault on Deccan Chargers and win after four consecutive defeats in the DLF IPL.

After put in to bat by the Deccan Chargers, Delhi Daredevils skipper Virender Sehwag perished for naught in the first over of their IPL tie.

Virender Sehwag tried to slash the last delivery of P Vijaykumar but the ball found RP Singh beneath it at the third man region. From there on, Gambhir and Dhawan dominated the battle with Deccan bowlers. Gambhir carried on with his ominous form and smashed three sixes and seven fours. Shikhar Dhawan also joined the party and remained unbeaten on 68 runs.

Gambhir made 79 runs before Adam Gilchrist stumped him off Pragyan Ojha's bowling. Ojha struck soon and removed Maharoof who scored quick 19 runs. Tillakratne Dilshan also chipped in with a swift knock of 16 runs before Gilchrist ran him out.

Despite this win, there is no shuffle in the points table. Daredevils retain the fifth position with ten points.
